Repair or replace…..when is the right time to replace my boiler?
24 Mar 2015 Lisa Smith
This is a question that we have been asked several times already this year. Ultimately, there are three main factors that you should consider:
1.) Initial budget
3.) Long-term cost savings
Budget is always high on everyone’s list. If your boiler breaks down, it may not necessarily be the end of the world. With some proper diagnosis, it could be solved by a simple replacement part, which depending on the part could be as little as a £30 outlay for materials and in a few hours it’s working again, keeping you nice and warm!
The time to consider replacing your boiler comes when multiple parts seem to be failing at once, or in quick succession.
Recently, a customer of ours called us out to a faulty boiler that was going to need in excess of £500 spending on replacement parts alone in order to return it to a safe working condition, in addition to the labour required for fitting and testing all the new parts and certifying the boiler as safe again. In this instance, the customer decided that it made much more financial sense to replace the boiler.
Depending on your circumstances and your legacy heating system, changing a boiler can sound like quite an upheaval and this sometimes puts people off. We understand that everybody has work and family to think about and we will always discuss your circumstances with you and manage any downtime to an absolute minimum so that you can get on with your daily lives while the work is being carried out!
If you are replacing a heat only boiler (tanks in the roof or a cylinder in an airing cupboard) then one of the biggest advantages for you is going to be the storage space freed up by installing a more modern boiler. Modern boilers are more compact and can be fitted in a kitchen cupboard or airing cupboard or even in the loft itself, meaning valuable space becomes available for you for all that every day important stuff that we all seem to have so much of!
Long-term cost savings
We all strive to save money where we can, and replacing your boiler with a brand new one may not seem like a frugal solution if you are trying to cut costs. However, the long-term financial advantages can be huge. With all A-rated boilers now, the efficiency levels are so high that your gas and water bills would reduce significantly. The more efficient the system, the less money you will have to pay each month. For more tips on efficiency take a look at our ‘Simple heating system maintenance’ blog and look out for next month’s blog, where we will explain what Powerflushing is and how it helps your system run more economically.
All the boilers that we install come with at least a 1 year manufacturers warranty on parts and we can also quote for extended parts warranty options ranging from 2 to 10 years, just ask us when we quote you.
